Shehbaz Sharif pushes digital reform of tariff body

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed the digitisation of the National Tariff Commission’s (NTC) functions to enhance transparency and improve regulatory standards, while stressing that institutional restructuring was critical for boosting industrial growth and attracting investment.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on reforms within the NTC, the prime minister called for a comprehensive strategy to resolve the commission’s legal and administrative challenges. He emphasised that an efficient and transparent tariff system was vital to promote industry, facilitate trade, and create a more investment-friendly environment in the country.
The premier instructed authorities to introduce special measures aimed at supporting investors and industrialists, ensuring they are protected from unnecessary legal and procedural complications. He also underlined the importance of studying global best practices to align the commission’s performance and restructuring with international standards.

Highlighting the role of technology, Shehbaz Sharif directed the adoption of modern tools such as information technology and artificial intelligence to improve the commission’s operations. He further stressed the need to simplify legal procedures, particularly within the appellate tribunal, to ensure quicker and more efficient decision-making.
The prime minister also called for capacity building within the NTC, instructing that staff be trained according to international benchmarks. He recommended engaging professional experts to provide practical guidance on implementing reform measures effectively.
Expressing concern over delays in case resolution, the premier warned against prolonged proceedings and directed the establishment of a system to ensure all cases are decided within a specified timeframe.
During the meeting, the NTC chairman briefed participants on ongoing legal, administrative, and financial reforms under the approved roadmap. Several federal ministers and senior officials attended the session.
